What Is a Sump Pump and Why Is It Important?

While it might seem like a rare circumstance, 14.6 million properties in the U.S. are at risk of flooding. From bad storms to plumbing problems, you never know when they’ll be puddles of water in your house.

A sump pump is your best friend in these circumstances. It will prevent you from losing your personal belongings or replacing other household appliances.

Keep reading if you find yourself wondering what is a sump pump or what does the sump pump installation process entail?

What Is a Sump Pump?

The purpose of a sump pump is to remove water and its located in the basement or the crawl space of your home. The crawl space sits between the ground floor and the first floor. It’s tiny, hollow, and challenging to access.

The sump pump detects leaks and collects the water before it floods the basement or the crawl space. Afterward, it drains through the sump pump discharge pipe and away from your home. People who have larger homes often purchase two sump pumps, so the water gets collected quicker, preventing one from becoming overwhelmed by doing the job alone.

There are two different types to choose from, the pedestal pump and the submersible one. As the name states, the submersible pump sits below ground, while the pedestal pump rests on the crawl space’s floor.

As far as their lifespans go, the pedestal pump lasts longer and costs less. However, that is because it doesn’t exude as much power as the submersible pump. Even though it doesn’t have as long a lifespan as the pedestal pump, it will still last about ten years.

Sump Pump Installation

While installing a sump pump may be something you’re inclined to do yourself, it is important to note that this is a tedious task. Plus, you need to have all the tools and materials to install it correctly.

From putting the lining in the basin to making sure the impeller, float valve, and check switch work properly, there are so many working parts that make the sump pump run. If any one of them isn’t doing their job, the pump might not be able to handle rising waters.

The cost of hiring a professional is worth the stress it will save you.  This sump pump installation service even offers battery backup systems, so you don’t have to worry about your sump pump turning off right when you need it the most.

Protect Your House from Flooding

What is a sump pump if not a lifesaver? While it may not be at the top of your list of appliances to purchase for your home, it should be.

Whether you need to replace the one you have or install one in your house for the first time, you must do it sooner rather than later. Don’t risk losing your home appliances to water damage.
