Ask any homeowner what they obsessed over during their last renovation, and you’ll hear about grout color, cabinet hardware, maybe which shade of white to paint the trim. Nobody obsesses over the ground. Which is a little strange when you think about it, because the ground is one part of the whole project that doesn’t forgive mistakes. The ground does more work than people give it credit for
Soil isn’t uniform, even on a single lot. Clay swells when it gets wet and shrinks when it dries, and that back-and-forth movement can tilt a slab out of level over a couple of seasons without anyone noticing until a door won’t close right. Sandy soil has the opposite problem, water moves through it fine, but it doesn’t always compact enough to hold real weight without settling. They’ll check how compacted the soil is and what its moisture content looks like, because skipping that step is a big part of why additions end up cracked within a couple of years. Questions to ask before you sign anything
If you’re still in the planning stage of a project that involves new foundation work, a handful of questions up front can save a lot of headaches later:

- What mix is being used, and does it make sense for your climate and what the slab needs to carry
- How is curing time being handled if the work lands during a heat wave or a cold snap
- Can you get any testing or inspection results in writing instead of just a verbal ‘it’s fine’
A good contractor isn’t going to flinch at these questions. If anything, the ones who already build these checks into their process are usually the ones happy to talk about it without being pushed.
Bottom line
There’s nothing wrong with getting excited about a new kitchen layout or finally finishing that basement. But the stuff buried under the visible parts of a renovation is what decides whether it still looks good in ten years, not just next spring.
