How Much Does It Cost to Add a Room to Your Home?

There are many different rooms that can be added onto a house so that you enjoy it more. A room addition not only gives you more space, but it also gives your home a higher value.

The Cost of a Room Addition

The cost of a room addition is generally anywhere from $20,900 to $72,600. However, you can often pay as little as $5,600 for a small room addition, or you could pay up to $125,000 for a larger, more complex one. The differences in cost depend on the cost of the labor and material as well as the area that you live in and the kind of room it will be. It can also cost much less if you do the work yourself.

Square Foot Costs

One of the main cost factors is the size of the room. Bigger sizes mean more materials and more labor to install them. There are cost averages for different sizes of room you want to build. For a room that is 10′ x 12′, you can expect to pay between $9,600 to $24,000. For a room that is 12′ x 12′ can cost between $11,520 to $28,000. A room that is 20′ x 20′ costs an average of between $32,000 and $80,000. A room that is 500 square feet can cost from $40,000 to $100,000. For 600 square feet, be prepared to pay from $48,000 to $120,000. If you are adding a room that is 1,000 square feet, you can expect to pay between $80,000 and $200,000.

Types of Room Additions and Their Prices

Bathrooms can be expensive rooms to add to your home with all of the plumbing systems and fixtures that are needed. You will likely pay between $20,000 and $90,000 with a typical average of $75,000. If you are building a new bedroom plus a bathroom averages about $25,000 to $100,000 and can easily go up from there depending on the size and the materials used. A kitchen is another expensive room to add, as it needs more expensive materials and may need appliances. Kitchens can be anywhere from $48,000 to $95,000 to add on.

A dining room or living room that is of typical size can cost you from $17,300 to $43,200 to build. A laundry room is highly useful and reasonably priced at between $5,000 and $7,000 on average because they are small and don’t typically get high-end materials. A mudroom is usually on par with this size, running from about $3,600 to $7,200. Adding on a sunroom averages at around $25,000, though a higher-end room can reach upwards of $80,000.

With a new room added onto their homes, homeowners can add the space they need or have their house grow as their family does. Are you interested in adding onto your home? Visit Angi, previously known as Angie’s List, to learn more about home additions and to find local contracting companies.
