A Simple Guide To Decorating Your Home According To Your Personality

Decorating your home can be quite a daunting task. This is especially true if you’ve set your heart out on designing your home according to your personality type. Here’s a simple guide to help you in this task.

First Things First

When people talk about choosing a style for their home (according to their personality) this doesn’t mean they should limit themselves to one particular look, trend, or label. Personalities are more complex to just fit in one interior design style, and it’s perfectly okay to mix things up. After all, people are truly complex in their nature. This is also a great time to discover what you love about yourself through designing your own home. While there are many personality types such as the 16 personalities according to the Myers-Briggs test, you don’t have to put yourself in a box, but instead go for the colors, schemes, and furniture that you intuitively like. Moreover, you should also base the style on the type of activities you like to do. If you like to play pool, having a huge pool table in your home is going to impact your style, so learn to build around the things you enjoy but remember to put them out first.

Start With a Single Room

If you’re new to the interior design scene, (aka you’ve never designed anything in your life, ever), you should firstly limit yourself to decorating a single room. While you choose which room you want to decorate, it is crucial to figure out all the aspects that make that room special. Some of these crucial aspects are whether the room has big windows, or you are facing a kitchen with huge amounts of counter space. Things like this are important to consider because, as you’ll see down the road, they are quite a limiting factor. Next, you should look at some aspects that will most easily communicate your personality types such as colors, or focal pieces, or different pieces of furniture. What many interior designers have noted is that wall panels can be placed to easily reflect your state of mind (and in this case your personality). Modern wet wall panels or any kind of stylish panels can do a great job of simply reflecting what you are like as a person since they come in many different textures, colors, and styles.

Decide How You Want to Live

This is a big one. Even though there are no right or wrong answers here, it can be quite tricky to discern. The rooms in your home can either be traditional or modern, visually warm or cool, or either formal or relaxed. Use your judgement and maybe even ask your friends and family what they have noticed about how you like to live. More often than not, they will have some specific insight that you may not be aware of. However, some pointer questions to help you, aside from the “How would you like to live in this room?” are how many people will ultimately live there, what are your ambitions about the home, and what you will ultimately be doing in each specific room. For example, if you regularly host dinner parties, your home should be very different from a home that doesn’t have a big dining space or a sufficient kitchen. If you don’t like watching TV, leave out all the furniture

You Can Always Go Minimal

If you have no idea how to decorate your home, and especially if you’re facing a small budget, one great thing to do, at least as a stepping stone, is to first decorate your home in a minimalist manner. Minimalist design is often associated with people who are perfectionists, efficient, and methodical. While this may be true for some people, the minimalist design doesn’t have a single pattern that needs to be followed, and you can express your personality equally well (and many will argue more efficiently) through less furniture. As we’ve previously noted, the minimalist design doesn’t have to be permanent, but you can use it as a guiding tool to put in key pieces of furniture or to select your favorite colors. From then on, it’s a simple matter of layering over this base as you decide to put more furniture in. If you decide that you like the simplicity and practicality of the minimalist design, by all means, leave things as they were.

This simple guide will better help you to decorate your home according to your personality. Be sure to follow all the aspects so you can do this promptly, and be sure to consider some aspects such as wall panels that will easily help you reflect your personality through many colors, textures, and styles.
