These Are the Most Common Types of Roof Damage to Watch Out For

How much thought do you give to the literal roof above your head?

If you’re like most homeowners, some years may pass before you start thinking about the condition of your roof. But considering the average roof only lasts 20-30 years, you may be overdue for roof repair or even a full roof replacement.

Do you know the common signs of roof damage? What types of damage should you look out for? Don’t be caught unaware — keep reading for everything you need to know!

1. Water Damage & Leaks

A leak in the middle of your living room is a sure sign of a damaged roof, but hopefully you’ll find the problem before it gets to that point.

Shingles and other roofing materials are designed to keep water out. But if these get damaged somehow, they leave your home wide open to water damage.

Look for signs of water intrusion in the form of stains on your ceilings or walls. Moss, mildew, mold, and musty smells are all signs of water damage too.

2. Loose or Broken Shingles

This is the easiest type of roof damage to identify. You may notice a new leak or spot downed shingles in your yard after a storm. You may also find “bruised” shingles after a hailstorm or if your roof gets hit with flying debris.

Get on the ladder and take a (careful) look at the condition of your roof. Are there any bare patches where the shingles are damaged, bruised, or missing?

3. Worn Out Roofing Materials

Is your roof nearing the end of its lifespan? If so, there are some tell-tale signs that you’ll soon be in need of a roof replacement.

These might include:

  • Bare spots
  • Grayed shingles
  • Peeling
  • Blistering
  • Cracking
  • Rust
  • Moss

If you’re not exactly sure what to look for, you can find out more about professional roof inspections in your area. It’s never a bad idea to have an expert pair of eyes to look over your roof.

4. Cracks, Holes, & Punctures

These may seem minor, but they can open up your home to a world of other types of damage.

For example, a tiny hole in your roof is the perfect entryway for insects, rodents, or even larger pests, like opossums or raccoons. These often occur as a result of storm damage, someone walking incorrectly on your roof, or something much simpler like the neighborhood woodpecker.

5. Structural Roof Damage

If the supports underneath your roof start failing or shifting, you may see visible signs of damage. Your roof may start to bend, buckle, or sag, or you may notice water pooling in a flat area or in the gutters.

These are signs of serious roof damage that require major repair work.

Find & Fix Your Roof Damage Today

Even the best roofs won’t last forever. Wind, hail, snow, and other conditions over time can lead to a damaged roof.

Keep an eye out for these common signs of roof damage. It’s also a good idea to set up regular inspections with a roofing company in your locale.
