That includes oil-based polyurethane & water-based polyurethane.

An oil-based polyurethane takes a bit longer time to dry as compared to water-based. Refinishing a hardwood floor is all about applying polyurethane. What you need to know here is how much time it takes to apply and let it dry. Let’s check it out for both types of polyurethane.

Estimated Time To Refinish The Hardwood Floor

By Using Oil Based Polyurethane

Refinishing hardwood floors using an oil-based polyurethane normally takes 3-5 days. It can be more depending on whether there is a sturdy stain, the Intensity of darkness of the stain, humidity of the hardwood, and how many coats of polyurethane you apply.

When the weather is dry and not humid, three coats of polyurethane may usually be applied in three days. It includes giving 24 hours to each coat to dry without any staining. If your hardwood floor needs to be stained too then a stain takes about 24 hours to dry & if the stain is deeper, it may take 36 or even 48 hours to dry. So, if you apply three coats of poly to a dark stain that takes two days to dry, then the estimated time for this would be 5-days.

It also depends on the area of the floor. Most locations can stand up to 1000 sq ft every day, if you have a large area up to 3,000 sq ft, you may need up to two more days. Just remember that the time taken for refinishing your hardwood floor depends on so many factors like weather, condition of flooring & most importantly wood species. Different wood species vary accordingly depending on their nature. So, it takes a bit more time in refinishing the hardwood floor.

Time Taken By Hardwood Floor After Refinishing By Oil-Based Polyurethane

The refinishing procedure takes time and you can’t access these rooms/move furniture in while it’s being done and because it’s a bit unpleasant and smelly, most people choose to refinish their hardwood flooring before they move.

An oil-based polyurethane finish takes a bit more time to get dry because it is much sticky and takes time to get absorbed in the floor and give it a new look.

By Using Water-Based Polyurethane

The most significant advantage of water-based polyurethane is that it dries more quickly. So, if you’re in a hurry, this can help you solve your time problems. Refinishing hardwood floors with water-based polyurethane normally takes only two days. In Fact, Some places can be done in one day, but you must give it a bit of time to dry. it will last longer if you give more drying time, and each coat will take an additional 2-4 hours to dry.

With water-based polyurethane, you may generally relocate furniture within 24 hours. There are a few more factors that might cause the procedure to take longer that are square footage, rip up, type of wood & repair work, etc.

Time Taken By Hardwood Floor After Refinishing By Water-Based Polyurethane

Water-based polyurethane is not very sticky and thick; it takes a few hours to completely dry. It can be a quick solution to your ugly hardwood floor that you are using for many years.
