How to Make Tile Floor Less Slippery

Tiles are one of the best options for any floor, especially in places where the floor is likely to get wet. The great thing about tiles is that they can be purchased in a huge variety of colors and styles, allowing you to create a personal yet practical space. Tiles are generally hardwearing, surprisingly easy to install, and need virtually no maintenance.

However, interior tiles tend to have a smooth finish. This can make them slippery, especially if something has been spilled on them. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to make a tile floor less slippery without having to replace the floor.

Of course, if you are interested in lifting the tiles you’ll find a great array of epoxy floor coatings that can be put down instead. These are very durable, available in a selection of colors, and have a natural non-slip quality.

Add Rugs

The simplest solution to slippery tiles is to invest in several rugs or carpet runners. These can be fixed to the floor, ensure they stay where they are supposed to. You can then confidently walk on the carpet area without worrying about slipping.

Rugs and carpets are generally a cost-effective solution and they can add a nice splash of color to any room. They can even be replaced with the season if desired.

Of course, you do need to be careful regarding what is spilled on the rugs, they may need to be cleaned regularly.

Foam Flooring

Foam flooring is generally less attractive than carefully positioned rugs. However, it is a practical solution for slippery floors, especially if you need something in a workshop, home gym, or even a playroom.

The best option is an interlocking foam floor, you’ll instantly notice the difference. However, it will change the look and feel of the room and the edge of the foam flooring can be a trip hazard.

Anti-Slip Compound

There are a variety of anti-slip compounds on the market. You can take a look at what is on offer and then choose the compound that is best suited to the type of tiles you have. You’ll then need to follow the instructions regarding how to apply the anti-slip coating to your floor.

It is worth noting that as well as getting a compound to clean your floor with, you can use adhesive treads. These are strips that stick to your tiles. The top is like the surface of a skateboard ensuring you have good grip and won’t slip.

These treads can be bought in black or transparent, allowing you to effectively make them invisible in your room.

Floating Floor

Perhaps the most extreme option is to simply add a new floor over the tiled one. You may be able to add laminate flooring straight to the tiles or buy tread plates. But, if this isn’t an option you can fasten wood to the tiles and create a new floor, effectively a floating floor. This can then be covered in wood, laminate, or any other type of floor coating you wish.
