What Are Soil Mites?

The soil mites are a kind of arthropods belonging to the subphylum known as “chelicerate.” Following are four commonly occurring suborders of the soil: 

  1. Private
  2. Prostigmata
  3. Mesostigmata
  4. Astigmata

Soil mites can fly to your beautiful outdoor plants and garden from relatively safe indoor plants. The soil mites grow, primarily in compost heaps or in potted herbs or plants, like mushrooms. They feed on small dead insects, bacteria, dying plants and little live worms feed. These mites are often present in decomposing organic materials like manure, molds, or dead leaves. Soil mites are irritating as they are unattractive and make potted plants look ugly. Soil mites can invade your home and find refuge in potted pots. They can fly to your beautiful outdoor plants and garden from relatively safe indoor plants. This may present a danger to the health of people living in houses, as some studies show that soil mites carry parasites like tapeworms in them. However, no research has found that the soil mites are directly biting or stinging people, but as it is commonly advised, prevention is better than cure, so one should be careful regarding the growth of soil mites in his / her house.

Getting rid of Soil Mites

The soil mites grow, primarily in compost heaps or in potted herbs or plants, like mushrooms. They feed on small dead insects, bacteria, dying plants and little live worms feed. These mites are often present in decomposing organic materials like manure, molds, or dead leaves. Here are some tips that can help to get rid of soil mites.

  • Removing old soil and decayed material from potted indoor plants as well as outdoor plants regularly.
  • Re-potting plants with new and clean soil free of soil mites and their larvae. However, be careful and protect the roots of plants from any damage.
  • Cleaning dead leaves daily will reduce the chance of growth of soil mites drastically.
  • Spraying the plants and soil of pots with the organic anti-mite sprays can help reduce the growth of soil mites and other insects.
