Size Does Matter Tips on How to Choose the Correct Moving Truck Size

It’s that time again. Time to pack up your things, load everything up, and head off to a new home. Maybe this new spot is just around the corner, maybe it’s miles and miles away. Regardless, a move is a big life event and something to take seriously.

Young people are moving at higher and higher rates and it’s important to handle things in a safe manner.

You may have made the decision to handle your move all on your own. Taking the DIY approach is admirable and it can certainly save you money. However, there are a number of challenges you’ll have to navigate and it won’t be an easy road ahead.

One of the big things you’ll need to determine is what moving truck size to get. Getting too small or too large of a truck can waste time and money. It can also put your belongings in danger.

Read on and we’ll walk you through what you need to know about moving.

Truck Rental Options

Doing a DIY move means there’s a lot that you need to figure out on your own. If you were to hire local movers with experience, they’d likely be able to tell you exactly what size truck you need.

Without their expertise, you’ll need to do this mental math all on your own.

It can be helpful to start with an understanding of what kind of trucks are out there. Smaller moving trucks tend to be about ten feet, with the largest trucks being around 30 feet. There are, of course, sizes in between these two extremes.

You’ll likely see 15, 17, and 20-foot trucks available from most truck rental companies. You might also even be able to get smaller trailers that hitch on to the back of your vehicle if you find that you have a small number of objects to move.

It’s always a good idea to talk with the rental company you’re planning on working with and see what they have available. They might be able to help you decide which truck would be best suited for your needs.

Methods to Determine Truck Size

Now that you know the options available to you, how can you decide which truck to rent for your big move?

There’s more than one way to arrive at a final answer. Here are some things to consider to help you narrow down your options.

How Many Bedrooms Are You Moving?

One of the most popular methods for determining moving truck size is to simply count the numbers of rooms you are planning on moving. The more rooms, the larger the truck.

This is a general rule, of course. If you happen to have a very minimalist sensibility, for example, this might not be a good guide. The same could be said if you have more than the average amount of furniture in each room.

If you’re moving to a simple studio apartment, you should be okay with that small ten-foot truck or even a trailer. A two-bedroom home can likely fit okay into a 15-foot truck.  If you have a third bedroom or a very busy two-bedroom home, you might want to upgrade to a 20-foot option.

If you have more than four bedrooms in your home, the option becomes clear. You’re going to want to get whatever the largest size your rental company offers.

While this is not a foolproof methodology, it can usually set you down the right track to picking a truck properly. If you’re on the edge between two options, it is a good idea to go with the larger option.

It’s always better to have to secure some extra space than not having enough space for all your belongings.

Precise Measurements

Are you one of those people that doesn’t like to leave anything to chance? Then you might want to have a more precise way to determine which truck to get. Most rental truck companies will provide the exact cubic foot measurements of their vehicles.

With this information in hand, you could theoretically plan out the physical nature of your entire move. You can measure your furniture, make a floor plan, and determine exactly how much space you’ll need to fit everything.

Obviously, you’ll likely do a little bit of stacking objects on top of one another and you’ll need to take this into account. With this plan in place, you’ll be able to rent a truck with little to no doubt. That should certainly help you sleep easier at night!

Packing Smart Ahead of Time

Of course, fitting everything into your moving truck will also depend on how well you pack everything. Compact packing into well-organized boxes will help to create as simple of a move as possible.

If you fail to pack smart and have loose items everywhere, you’ll end up taking up much more room than you would have otherwise. This can be chaos for your truck packing.

It’s a good idea to get started packing ahead of your moving date by at least a week. This way you can get a better sense of how everything will be packed and what it will look like. Seeing everything together will give you peace of mind.

It also gives you time to make an adjustment and upgrade your truck if it turns you you might need more room than you initially thought.

Anticipating Moving Truck Size

There are a lot of challenges involved in a DIY move. Deciding upon a proper moving truck size is one of the major ones. The above information can help you make the right choice.
