5 Common Window Replacement Mistakes

Replacing an old window is not as easy as it seems. It is a delicate process that demands precise measurements and attention to detail. That’s why it is so easy to do it wrong. So, here are the five most common mistakes done when replacing windows. And if at any point, you think that this work is too much, here is where you can find Local Window Contractors to do it for you.

  1. Wrong Measuring of the Window Opening

When measuring the window to order the glass for it, most people do it only once for each side, mostly along one of the sides. But the thing is you actually should measure it in three places for each side — in the center and along the edges. Then, you should take the smallest measurement you’ve got for a side and go with it.

If you have ordered a piece of glass on the wrong side, you cannot return it. This means you will have to start all over again and end up paying twice the price. So, get the measurements right from the first try or ask a sales consultant to come and do it for you.

  1. Disregarding the Size of the Jamb

If you are about to replace a window including the frame, you will be ordering new ones with jambs attached. This means you need to consider the width of the jambs when placing an order. Make sure to carefully read the specifications of the windows you are about to order.

  1. Using the Wrong Kind of Foam

A common mistake when sealing the windows with foam is to go for the expanding one. While it seems as if it will firmly hold the window in place, it will actually bend and distort the jambs. This not only spoils the window’s appearance but also affects its insulation properties.

While we are at it, feeling the entire perimeter with foam is also wrong. It prevents unwanted water from naturally escaping.

  1. Not Adjusting the Window Before Securing It

During full-frame replacement, a new window is placed in the opening and then secured. But before it happens, you must first make sure that all the needed adjustments have been made. Those include:

  • centering
  • leveling
  • plumbing
  • making sure it is square

It is much easier and cheaper to get everything done right from the start than to redo this later. Special shims may be needed to adjust the window so it sits in the opening nice and even.

  1. Don’t Buy Glass Only Because of Low Price

The desire to save money is understandable, but there are better ways to save money on window glass. For example, you can get a better price if you go straight to the vendor instead of a reseller. The process might take a bit longer, and the prices make come into vogue at the very beginning, but in the end, it will surely pay off. And, of course, take time to search for vendors that you will like the most.
